Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA or Région Sud) is a region of France, located at the far southeastern point of the mainland.

The main prefecture and largest city is Marseille, France’s second largest city.

It was formed from the former French province of Provence, the former papal territory of Avignon, the former Sardinian-Piedmontese County of Nice, annexed in 1860, and the southeastern part of the former French province of Dauphiné.

The coastline in Nice is commonly refered to as the Côte d’Azur or French Riviera.

It borders in the east to Italy, in the south to the Mediterranean Sea and Monaco, in the north to Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and to the west by Occitanie, with the Rhône marking its westernmost border.

It has six départements: Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Alpes-Maritimes, Bouches-du-Rhône, Hautes-Alpes, Var and Vaucluse.

I have cycled a few cols in the Haute-Alps and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, mostly during my Tours of 2014 and 2017.

And of course the Mont Ventoux in the Vaucluse, plus the Alpes-Maritimes end of the Bonette.

Map of the area, with the Italian cols cycled during those Tours, apart from the Italian end of the Mont Cenis / Moncenisio.
