Giro d’Italia 2025 – Prologue

With our base camp in Bormio – Valdisotto, I can plot the Prologue of my Giro d’Italia 2025.

As is customary, this will start in/near a stop-over for the night on our way there.

There are a few (stop-over) options, but I want to avoid “useless” miles and car transfer(s) – either to the start or to the apartment – as much as possible.

This rules out most and leaves the option to start in Davos or Albula.

Albula/Tiefencastel is at the bottom of both the Albula pass and the Julier pass.

I’ve done both of them – together – in two stages during my Tour de Suisse 2019: stage 1 clockwise and stage 5 counterclockwise.

Report here.

The Julier pass is the least logical way. I would end up in Silvaplana and then have to get to either Samadan for the Bernina pass, or – way further – to Zernez for the Ofenpass.

The route over the Bernina would either land me in Tirano or Livigno.

From Tirano to Bormio is a long false flat and not very appealing. Neither is having to get over the Foscagno pass from Livigno.

Cycling the Albula pass would at least bring me closer to Zernez and the Ofenpass. The stage would then continue with the Umbrail, followed by the descent into Bormio.

As this is what I would prefer anyway, I might as well avoid most of the extra kilometers getting to Zernez by starting in Davos and tackle the Flüela pass.

Susch to Zernez is the shortest of the three options 😎

The Flüela pass was also cycled – from both ends – in stage 3 of that same Tour de Suisse…

So, the prologue of my Giro d’Italia 2025 will start in Davos and involves the Flüela pass, the Ofen pass and the Umbrail.

I will most likely get up to the summit of the Stelvio for a coffee and a snack at Genziano’s too.
