indieVelo Becomes TrainingPeaks Virtual

indieVelo LogoA while back I wrote a post about indieVelo.

At the time, it was new to me and I gave it a shot despite my aversion to riding in a cartoon world.

I bought myself a seat in the “Founders Club”, hoping it would help indieVelo to stay alive.

And the weekly updates from George were a good indication of the work he – his team – put into it.

Nevertheless, when most updates involved – further – preventing cheating and developing race functionality, I slowly lost interest.

Did I mention I have an aversion against riding in a cartoon world?

Well, that didn’t help either and I all but forgot about indieVelo…

Today I received an email from TrainingPeaks that they were exited to have acquired indieVelo.

This goes into effect immediately – George has become a full-time employee of TrainingPeaks as part of this, severing any ties he had to Zwift/ZADA.

As a result, IndieVelo is rebranded TrainingPeaks Virtual.

I’m not really tempted to take them up on the one free year of Premium offer, but it also seems like a waste if I don’t…

And I’m now 0 for 3 on my early adoptions: Sufferfest -> Wahoo, RGT -> Wahoo (and killed it) and now indieVelo -> TrainingPeaks.

I hope TrainingPeaks Virtual doesn’t end up like RGT – many RGT users fled to indieVelo when RGT died…

There’s certainly potential for – exciting? – new features for TrainingPeaks, which might / will make them more interesting.

But it will take time and a hard effort to get TrainingPeaks Virtual as a serious contender in the indoor virtual cycling market.

Will that be before they decide they’re running out of marketing dollars?

Too early to tell…

Other than Zwift, Rouvy and Bkool seem to be doing fine – for now – and I don’t see a lot of people switching.

And what about MyWhoosh?

Anyway, for me Zwift is a no-go, Rouvy is dead to me, Bkool is okay-ish and MyWhoosh is a hard pass.

I have a subscription to Bkool, but I actually use Kinomap more (and more) and you can find an increasing number of my own videos on that platform.

Check them out 😎

  1. I finally got an email from TP Virtual since I posted that so I am “good to go”. I’ve since heard they released an Apple TV version, so I will give when I get home from my trip.

When I open the icTrainer site, the page does not render properly, seems like some kind of style sheet issue. No worries though, I am probably going to just use TrainerRoad and watch YouTube or run IndieVelo at the same time.

  2. I agree with all of that. I was less committed to indie and only subscribed monthly during the winter. I didn’t get an email from Training Peaks 😢.

I don’t mind the cartoons and for me, the racing was a good way to get some threshold and anaerobic training. I was hoping to use their Apple TV version this winter but when I contacted Training Peaks I was informed they are not going to support that platform.
