Update: I made it a 180 km trip, cycling home from the start/finish. As that was 30 km into a head wind – again – I was slowly fading away in the end…
This Saturday I will participate in the IJsselmeer Challenge.
This is one of these events when I regret being an ‘einzelgänger’ and a Bike Rebel WITH a Cause for once.
The charity the organizers have partnered up with this year, is the Dutch Brain Tumor Foundation.
There’s no push to actually raise money in order to be able to participate, but it is
obviously a good thing to try/do.
But my quest for sponsors returned zip – the €150 raised is from my own money 😂
The course is a loop around the IJsselmeer – hence the name, I guess…
If you ride this challenge in full, you will cycle 300 km – that’s over the top for me, so I’m “just” cycling the bottom – southern – part.
(As the Afsluitdijk is closed for cyclists, there’s a bus transfer, which cuts some 30 kms from the distance)
I’ve done this (clockwise) before – it’s around 150 km, but it can be extended with an optional loop through West Frisia.
West Frisia is an area in the province of North Holland, on the opposite side of the IJsselmeer from the province of Frisia.
🫠
I won’t be doing that – if I’m up to it, I will cycle home from the start/finish location, with a detour if I feel really good…
