How a world-wide shitstorm creates first world problems for an overly privileged white guy…

As you may have read – but probably have not – I was allowed to buy a Trek Émonda (SL 7) late last year and a Giant Revolt (Advanced 1) early this year.

The former was a trade-in for my Trek Domane, the latter came with the new tires for my Canyon SpeedMax

This array of bikes – not to mention the additional one on my Tacx Neo 2T – is enough to prove my point about being privileged and make many of you weep.

It’s the “world is on fire” and shitstorm part of my opening sentence, that is creating somewhat of a “First World Problems” challenge in actually getting what you were allowed to buy…

While I would have liked a Trek Deamon, I was allowed to buy a Trek Émonda.

This post is about how I got away with that…

In 2020, I traded my Sensa for a Trek.

I got the Domane SL 5, which is just above entry level for Trek 😂

(It wasn’t even € 3,000 at the time, they are more expensive now…)

When I got my SpeedMax CF8 a year later, which came with Sram eTap AXS electronic shifting – and “wireless” at that – I was sure I’d never go back to mechanical shifting.

Okay, yes, I got my Sonora MTB this year and it has mechanical shifting, but that was just an extra “fun bike”, costing less than the fork for my SpeedMax…

Bye Trentino, Hello Domane

Just in time for my Giro d’Italia 2020 and/or my birthday, the Treasury Secretary has sanctioned the purchase of a new bike for expeditions like that: a Trek Domane.

My Sensa Trentino CDX was purchased at the time as an excuse for not having a bike suited for ‘mountaineering’, or the occasional off road trip.

While it has served me well during my ‘Tour de France’ of 2017 and last year’s ‘Tour de Suisse’, I only occasionally took it to roads that would be inaccessible on a ‘normal’ road bike.

And to be honest, it’s probably a cross/gravel bike well suited for its purpose, but for 95% of my rides, it’s just not the right fit.
