Giro d’Italia 2020

How did this Giro d’Italia come to be?

Well, late 2019, we initially booked a vacation on Tenerife, where I would cycle up and down El Teide and Paula would bake in the sun.

Then Corona/Covid-19 happened and we decided to not take avoidable risks and cancelled that trip.

Paula being who she is, then asked me if I would be in for an alternative, like Italy, maybe the Dolomites…

The occasional visitor of this site will know that I didn’t need a lot of time to think that over.

HELL YEAH!

Una passione che non finisce mai

“Giro d’Italia!” is my first thought whenever the Treasury Secretary gives the green light for another trip into the high mountains.

But while it was my first ever “Grand Tour” in 2011, the Giro d’Italia 2025 was only my 4th.

I’ve cycled 6 in France – 2026 will be the 7th – and another in Switzerland

Passo di Giau


With a summit at 2,236 meters, the Passo di Giau doesn’t earn a high ranking in the list of highest (paved) passes in Europe.

However, with an average of 9.2%, the climb from Selva di Cadore is a tough one.

Cycling the Alps

Cyclopaat's Island - the bottom left part is his backyard

Coming from a basically pancake-flat country – he actually lives below sea level, on the world’s largest artificial island – it’s amazing how much Cyclopaat likes cycling the Alps.

Even on a good day, he’s an average climber at best, but he claims it’s all about the views.

That is, he isn’t bad at it, but as he’s insane, he cycles multiple passes every day, for up to two weeks.
