Giro d’Italia 2011 – Recap

At the end of 2010, the first ideas for a trip to the Italian Alps arose.

Since his “storming” of the Stelvio in 2008, Cyclopaat wanted to go back for more.

He went on a – rigorous – diet, became a little bit overconfident while planning the stages of the trip.

But eventually had his first “Grand Tour”, a Giro d’Italia of his own making…

Mapei Day

(More Stelvio and a hidden gem)

For his birthday, C. treated himself with another climb of the Stelvio during Mapei Day.

After all, to honor him, the Italians had closed the road for all motorized traffic.

And they also invited a couple of thousand friends to accompany him on his ride…

He almost missed the party though, for they told him to be present ‘around 9:30’ which usually is the Italian way of saying ‘don’t get up early – be here around 10’.

But upon reaching the fork with the Stelvio from Valdidentro, where he got on his bike in front of the hotel, the masses where coming towards him…

Giro d’Italia 2011 – Rest Day

Giro 2105 - Torri di FraeleAs if to punish him, poor C. – having a well deserved day off – witnessed that the weather today was good.

Rain and more rain the previous three days, but not today 🙁

Hopefully, this weather will continue through tomorrow.

The ‘Mapei Day’ climb of the Stelvio would be more enjoyable while closed to motorized traffic.

Giro d’Italia 2011 – Stage 10

It was raining (again) this morning and C. tweeted he might have been hit by a truck overnight (or at least by a minivan).

Not very good conditions to undertake more crazy climbing expeditions, like taking on both the Gavia and Stelvio in one ride…

But once again he couldn’t help himself and around 9:20 he and T. set course to Ponte di Legno.

C. was hoping for a chance to tackle the Gavia from that end, since the 1st attempt on Wednesday failed…
