Pinei & Alpe di Suisi

In 2011, I climbed the Pinei from Ponte Gardena and noticed a “split” near Castelrotto to the Alpe di Siusi.

Back then, I continued the route through Castelrotto, but for this year’s Giro, I looked up that climb which was not originally in the road book and I constructed a stage to it.

Leaving Corvara, I first climbed the Gardena from our front door, descended the 30+ kilometers to Ponte Gardena – with a stop for some more shopping in Selva – and then went up the same road as 4 years ago, when it was my warming up / prologue.

Strangely, I did not remember the bit with stretches of 11% before reaching Castelrotto and that wore me out more than I would have liked.

Giro d’Italia 2011 – Recap

At the end of 2010, the first ideas for a trip to the Italian Alps arose. Since his “storming” of the Stelvio in 2008, Cyclopaat wanted to go back for more.

He went on a – rigorous – diet, became a little bit overconfident while planning the stages of the trip, but eventually had his first “Grand Tour”, a Giro d’Italia of his own making…

GPS TrackAfter a smooth trip from Brunssum to Sankt Peter im Tal, Toerbeest and Cyclopaat arrived around noon at their hotel Albergo Bräuhaus, a very nice place to stay b.t.w.

While C. was anxiously studying maps, T. first sorted out the luggage and around 14:00 they left for C.’s first trip.

He planned ‘an easy ride’ up the Passo Pinei, but once again discovered that a profile may look not that bad, the truth is often less merciful, especially after a 10 hour drive.
